Balaj Pass (DJ127A), situated at an altitude of 1078 meters, connects the Putna Mare valley to the Bicaz valley, crossing the ridge between the Hășmaș Mountains and the Ceahlău Massif. The landscape is dominated by dense coniferous forests and mountain pastures, with panoramic views of the Hășmaș and Ceahlău ridges. The road is partially modernized for 14 km from the Bicazu Ardelean side, but the remainder is accessible only with off-road vehicles.
