Giuvala Pass

1,290m 73A Rucăr Bran 15km Asphalt

Giuvala Pass (DN73A), at 1290 meters altitude, is part of the scenic Rucăr-Bran corridor, one of the most beautiful roads in Romania. This pass marks the historic boundary between Transylvania and Wallachia, cutting through a mountain landscape dominated by the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului massifs. For centuries, the road served as a strategic checkpoint controlling access and the movement of goods between the two Romanian provinces.

The Rucăr-Bran area is a living open-air museum of traditional Romanian architecture. Villages along the route preserve old houses with wooden porches, carved gates, and wooden churches. The landscape alternates between wide mountain pastures, coniferous forests, and impressive rock formations. Near the pass, visitors can find the remains of a medieval fortress that once controlled customs and trade through the crossing.

Giuvala Pass is open year-round and forms part of one of the most popular tourist routes in the Southern Carpathians. The road provides direct access to mountain resorts in the area and to trailheads for ascents into Piatra Craiului and Bucegi. Autumn and spring are particularly beautiful times to travel the route, when the scenery is colorful and traffic is lighter.
