Gutâi Pass

987m 18 Baia Mare Sighetu Marmației 30km Asphalt

Gutâi Pass (DN18), at an altitude of 987 meters, crosses the Gutâi Mountains in northwestern Romania, linking Baia Mare to Sighetu Marmației and providing one of the most direct routes into the heart of Maramureș. The road climbs through beech and oak forests, passing spectacular volcanic formations that testify to the volcanic origins of these mountains.

The landmark of the route is the “Creasta Cocoșului” (Rooster’s Crest), an impressive volcanic rock formation visible from the road that rises dramatically above the forest. At the summit of the pass, travelers can take in expansive panoramic views over the Maramureș Depression and the surrounding mountains. The area is rich in minerals and has a long mining tradition, visible in the remnants of mining operations in the vicinity.

Gutâi Pass is open year-round, though winter driving conditions can be challenging due to frequent snowfall and fog. The route is very popular among tourists visiting traditional Maramureș, providing quick access to villages with wooden churches, carved Maramureș gates, and customs that have been kept alive for centuries. At the base of the pass on the northern slope, the road descends toward Sighetu Marmației, the gateway to historic Maramureș.
