Transrarău

1,520m 175B Pojorâta Chiril 28km Asphalt

The Transrarău (DJ175B), nicknamed the “Road of Treasures,” is one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Bucovina. The route crosses the Rarău Massif over 28 kilometers, connecting the villages of Pojorâta (in the Moldova Valley) to Chiril (in the Bistrița Valley). The road’s nickname originates from a legend that in 1541, the Moldavian voivode Petru Rareș hid his family and treasures in these mountains.

The road climbs through ancient coniferous forests, offering stunning panoramas and access to the famous Pietrele Doamnei (Lady’s Rocks), one of Romania’s most impressive geological formations. The highest point reaches approximately 1520 meters at the Alpin Rarău Hotel area. From here, hikers can explore Rarău Peak (1651 m) and the Pietrele Doamnei nature reserve.

Fully paved between 2014 and 2016, the Transrarău remains a demanding road due to its tight curves and narrow single-lane sections. The speed limit is 30 km/h, with uphill traffic having priority. The road is typically closed from November through April.
